Separate services before comparing devices
Space conditioning, water heating, refrigeration, cooking, lighting, electronics, and standby power behave differently.
Start by mapping every energy source—electricity, gas, delivered fuel, district energy, or on-site generation—to the service it provides. An electric bill alone cannot describe a gas-heated home.
Use season, duration, and duty cycle to find scale
High power for minutes can use less energy than a moderate load running all day.
Compare energy, not only watts. Heating and cooling follow weather; water heating follows household demand; refrigeration cycles continuously; electronics may have long idle periods. Record when and how long each load operates.
Move from bill to circuit or device evidence
The closer the measurement is to the load, the less you must infer.
Use whole-bill kWh for the boundary, safe plug-in meters for compatible cord-connected devices, equipment labels for screening, and qualified professionals for panels, hard-wired systems, combustion appliances, or diagnostic instruments.
Target the largest controllable load with a verified cause
A generic “top ten” list cannot account for your climate or equipment.
First address safety, damage, or a clear malfunction. Then compare operational changes, maintenance, enclosure work, and replacement using measured baseline, useful life, comfort, and total project cost—not savings claims alone.
Rank energy rather than the largest watt label
An original illustrative comparison, not a measured household result.
Illustrative comparison: 1,500 watts for ten minutes uses 0.25 kWh; 100 watts for ten hours uses 1 kWh. The smaller power draw uses four times the energy in these schedules. This arithmetic does not describe a typical household. Write down actual duration and cycling before deciding which load deserves attention.
Will the largest appliance always offer the biggest saving?

No. A large essential load may have little safe, practical flexibility. Compare controllable energy, not just total consumption. Include the cost of an intervention, comfort needs, and whether the measurement represents the season you are trying to improve.
